Fat-dissolving injections are injectable treatments designed to target small, localised areas of fat. The treatment works by disrupting fat cells in the treated area, which are then gradually cleared by the body.
What areas can be treated?
Treatment may be considered for areas such as under the chin, abdomen, flanks, thighs or other small areas of localised fat. We’ll assess the area during your consultation to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Is fat dissolving a weight-loss treatment?
No. Fat-dissolving injections are intended for targeted contouring of localised fat, rather than overall weight loss. They tend to be most appropriate for people who are relatively close to their desired weight but have particular areas they would like to address.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies depending on the area being treated, the amount of fat present, the product used and the result you’re hoping to achieve. Some people may require a course of several treatments spaced a number of weeks apart.
When will I see results?
Results develop gradually rather than immediately. Changes may start to become noticeable over the following weeks as the body clears the treated fat cells, with the final result taking longer to become apparent.
Are the results permanent?
Fat cells that are successfully destroyed by treatment do not regenerate. However, remaining fat cells can still increase in size if you gain weight, so maintaining a relatively stable weight can help preserve the result.
Does fat dissolving hurt?
You may experience stinging, burning, pressure or tenderness during and for a few days after treatment. The level of discomfort varies depending on the treatment area and individual.
Is there any downtime?
There can be more downtime with fat-dissolving injections than with some other injectable treatments. Swelling is very common and can be noticeable for several days, depending on the treatment area. Redness, tenderness, bruising and a feeling of firmness can also occur.
Are there any side effects?
Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, itching, numbness or firmness around the treated area. Less commonly, prolonged swelling or unevenness may occur.
Can fat dissolving treat loose skin?
Fat-dissolving injections primarily target fat rather than loose skin. Removing volume from an area can also make existing skin laxity more noticeable in some people, which is why assessment beforehand is important.
Can I have fat-dissolving injections while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Elective injectable treatments are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
